Ontario’s first multidisciplinary conference on child abuse, is taking place Friday, November 6, 2009, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Design Exchange, Trading Floor, 234 Bay Street, Toronto, ON.

The professionals in our community who work with abused children are coming together to discuss more effective and more timely interventions to address these children’s complex difficulties – police, child welfare, teachers, lawyers, and mental health experts. We need to collaborate and develop systems of care which utilize the resources of different professional groups. Better communication and a greater understanding of one another’s roles is an essential part of this process. Working alone or in a “silo” doesn’t work. The Mental Health Commission of Canada is developing a federal strategy to improve mental health services and reduce stigma but we need to start building links and forging alliances right now to combat Toronto’s youth violence and domestic violence. After the conference we will publish the recommendations of panel members and speakers. It is our intention to make this conference an annual event.
